What is Student-Centered Learning?

Student-centered learning focuses on each learner’s intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual needs to create engaging learning experiences that are intellectually rigorous and resonant and relevant emotionally, socially and spiritually. Through a whole-person approach to learning, students develop voice and agency, discover and become grounded in who they are, and understand how their talents and capabilities can better their communities and world.

Student-centered learning (SCL) empowers students to take active roles in their learning, helping them develop autonomy, mastery and independent problem-solving. SCL also hones students’ ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and successfully. In Jewish day schools, a student-centered approach plays a key role in developing students’ deep connections to Judaism, the Jewish people, and Israel.

What is Student-Centered Learning?

Student-centered learning shifts the focus from the teacher to the student, promoting learner autonomy and independence. This approach empowers students to take charge of their learning journey by developing skills and strategies to meet specific performance goals. It emphasizes lifelong learning and independent problem-solving, rooted in constructivist theory, which highlights the learner's role in making sense of new information.

In a student-centered environment, students' interests are prioritized, allowing them to choose what and how they learn, as well as how they assess their progress. This contrasts with traditional teacher-centered education, where the teacher directs all aspects of learning. Ultimately, student-centered learning fosters active participation and personal responsibility in the learning process, accommodating individual differences in interests and learning styles.
